Day 1 - Sunday
Map: CN. Val dIlliez 1304
We leave Morgins (1,330m) by a well marked trail that takes
us through pine forests above the village in an easterly direction before
swinging around to the south with our first glimpses of the magnificent
Dents du Midi mountain range. The Savolaire area provides gentle walking
through pasture land before we climb towards the Foilleuse at 1,800m.
Another short pull brings us to a wide ridge. From here a couple of steep
climbs interspersed with undulating meadows bring us to the Pointe de
lAu at 2,152m. The descent to Tovassiere starts steeply but we soon
find ourselves on a well worn track. The delightful alpage of Tovassiere
is always a welcome sight. Our return is easy with a gradual descent through
the trees. Approx: 4 - 5 hours walking time.
Day 2 Map:
IGN Morzine Massif du Chablais. 3528ET
Today we walk into France via the lac de Morgins. At the
border, we climb steeply in a westerly direction and the first part of
our walk follows a mix of trails through the forest above the Linga. We
emerge at Plaine Dranse and follow the road to the Col de Bassachaux where
we pick up the GR5. We follow this wonderful trail in a southerly direction
to the Col de Chesery where we cross back into Switzerland. This is probably
the prettiest part of the walk with an abundance of alpine flowers, brooks
and meadows. Our initial descent to the Portes du Soleil valley is steep
but we soon hit the track at Sassex and return via the Chemin des Ponts.
Approx: 5 - 6 hours walking time.
Day
3 Map: CN. Val dIlliez 1304
An early start and a minibus transfer to Chindonne at 1,604m
where we start our two day trek around the Dents du Midi and Barme. Apart
from a few short, steep climbs we spend most of the morning contouring.
This is a fabulous trail, packed with interest and variety. Parts of the
trail are remote and we often see marmots, chamois and eagles. After a
welcome break at the Cabane dAnteme we start our descent to Rossetan.
From here, a short climb brings us to the Refuge at Bonavau, one of the
most idyllic spots in the Alps. Accommodation is basic but the welcome
is warm. Approx: 6 hours walking time.
